We’re delighted to announce that Dr Warren Farrell has written a new foreword for our book Equality For Men by Glen Poole and you read more about this via this link. Below we present an edited version of Dr Farrell’s introduction:
I first met Glen when we co-spoke in Australia in 2013. It was immediately apparent that he knew how to speak from his heart as well as his mind. Yes, he cared about ideas; but he also cared about people. He understood core concepts, but he knew the value of making them easy to understand.
There’s a lot to love about Equality for Men. It pulls you in, like a dad taking his children for ice cream; like a woman looking at her husband with love. It does this by starting with questions that assure us that equality for men is not in opposition to equality for women, but enhances equality for women. Questions like, “Why Equality for Men?” and “What About Equality for Women?”
Equality for Men’s playful illustrations make us smile. For example, “Men Live Shorter Lives than Women” is illustrated by a girl toddler holding up her bigger ice cream cone, as the boy looks quizzically at his smaller cone. Yet as we’re smiling we’re given the option of hundreds of endnotes that allow us to know this isn’t a book being written off of the top of Glen’s head. What we get on an unconscious level is that the author isn’t a stag showing off his academic antlers, but a great teacher who knows how to make you happy you’re learning.
Like a great teacher, Glen at first introduces us very simply to ideas like equality, violence and fatherlessness. Then, having planted the seeds, he escorts the reader to a different garden. Soon he returns us to the tiny plants growing in our mind. And fertilizes them with the next level of learning about equality, violence and fatherlessness. When those plants have reached some maturity, we revisit in another context—helping us see, for example, how equality, violence and fatherlessness is also impacting our sons. Ultimately, like the mature plant that is now planting seeds of its own, Glen beseeches his readers to plant seeds of their own.
Equality for Men is more than a book about equality. It is also a book about courage—the courage to say what generates few rewards of money or prestige. And that, in my opinion, is what creates a real hero……
