Welsh campaigners demand Equality For Men….

Campaigners in Wales have called on the Welsh Government to do more to tackle the inequalities faced by men and boys. Members of Alliance Cymru have sent every Assembly Member in Wales a copy of our book  “Equality For Men” in the hope that it will inspire the politicians to take more action to address these “men’s issues” in 2014.

According to the Alliance Cymru, men and boys in Wales face:

  • shorter life expectancies
  • worse educational outcomes
  • greater risk of being excluded from school
  • greater risk of being a crime victim
  • greater risk of being a victim of violence
  • greater risk of being homeless, addicted or imprisoned
  • greater risk of being unemployed
  • greater risk of dying at work
  • greater risk of suicide
  • unequal parental rights

Anne O’Regan of Alliance Cymru said:

“The Welsh Government says it puts equality and inclusion at the heart of the work it does to help Wales to grow and flourish. If this is the case then we want to know what action we can expect to see next year to tackle the many inequalities that men and boys face?

“If any Assembly Members are in any doubt that men and boys do face serious inequality in a number of areas, then the book we have sent them about Equality For Men should set them straight.”

The author of Equality For Men, Glen Poole, said:

“I am delighted that Alliance Cymru have made sure that every Assembly Member in Wales has access to the very latest data on the inequalities that men and boys face. I hope my book, “Equality For Men”, will help them fulfill on their commitment to make Wales a more prosperous and equal place for everyone —- men and boys included.”

Alliance Cymru isn’t the first organisation to call for more focus on men’s issues in Wales. Earlier this year the Royal College of Nursing in Wales called for a national men’s health strategy to help improve men and boys’ lower life expectancy.

Alliance Cymru is a not-for-profit project committed to improving the lives of men and boys in Wales. Its objectives are:

  • To campaign and promote positive aspects and images of men, boys and masculinity
  • To challenge all forms of discrimination or abuse against men, boys and masculinity
  • To safeguard boys from discrimination and abuse and support men in confronting these issues

Alliance Cymru will be lobbying  local councilors across Wales to raise awareness of these issues and promote action to improve the situation for men and boys in Wales. To help with this campaign we’ve produced a list of 10 key inequalities facing men and boys in Wales
